Finally, the long awaited patch is finally here. It took forever, and it supposedly was worth it, just take a look at the changes (At the bottom of the following page). It’s 234.33 MB big and it’s definitely a worthwhile download, of course on my new connection it didn’t take too long. You can get the update from this page from Beyond Unreal, a great Unreal Tournament community site.
After updating, I ran the game but the Gamespy servers will still down so I couldn’t log in so I played with bots, even then it felt nicer. After going online about 30 minutes later, I was surprised to see many low ping servers, so I joined many and played a lot on each. I started at like 4 and it’s almost 9, great I need to do my homework. Anyways, it was great because, before I lost my Internet, on my slow connection I didn’t lag much in a certain server in Warfare mode, it was really nice. But a month later with a new faster connection and it lagged. There’s nothing that turns me off more about a game than lag, net lag to be exact, lag that I have no control over. I mean, FPS lag and whatever you can just lower settings, but net lag, running nothing else that uses the connection is all you can do. Oh, and change the rates and what not but that helps a tiny bit. Once again the game felt awesome. I was kinda turned off at UT3 after the lag that I didn’t play it for such a long time, because when I didn’t lag it felt so action packed and fast paced, then all of a sudden it was like ‘sloooow dooowwwn‘ (ahahah). I can’t play like that, I don’t know how anyone can.
Hopefully with this update more people will start playing UT3. Already I noticed faster servers and people with lower pings, so hopefully that’s a sign. The modding and mapping community have been at work since day one so we have TONS of content, we just don’t have enough players. If you’re interested in buying this wonderful game, there’s a special at GoGamer for $30 from the usual $50. If you do, I know many of my friends are getting it, aside from those who already have it, let me know so we can play sometime. It’s definitely a worthwhile investment. The Epic developers have always been close to the community so if there’s a problem with something they fix it. Aside from this, UT is a mod game, which means it never gets old because there’s literally thousands of free add-ons created ranging from weapons, maps, gametypes, and other stuff. Unreal Tournament is the multiplayer game. I don’t mean the best, though in my opinion it’s one of them, but literally it’s the multiplayer game. It’s not a game that has a story and happens to have multiplayer. The story of this game is multiplayer. To give you an idea, if I remember correctly, the story is that instead of having wars they had tournaments (You see what I mean now about being the multiplayer game?), spanning many gametypes and what not. In UT3, they took that to the next level and now they’re really having wars but with respawners and what not, it’s really great.
When the game came out it was horrible, with bugs that is, so it got many mixed reviewers and people were confused because UT games have a reputation. But two patches later and the game is already amazingly fixed, and there’s still more patches to come (Not an indication that things are still insanely messed up but that they aren’t giving up on us and will continue to improve the game). You guys should check the game out, it’s great.
