April Fools on the Internet has grown to be a very widely practiced custom and goes further than the typical ‘made you look’ feel of the April Fools we’re used to. Many huge sites and corporations participate in this event, marking April 1st of any year the day that you have to think twice before you believe anything on the Internet. With articles which sound like they came out of The Onion, it’s a great day to browse the net (If you don’t already do it every day haha). Since it might be difficult to find these ‘tricks’, it’s best to look in Social News sites, namely Digg (Which also participates in this event, as do many other sites).
Anyways, here are some of the April Fools jokes that I’ve found. If I find a Digg submission page for it I’ll post that instead because many of the comments on Digg are great.
» Zelda Movie Trailer: A trailer for an upcoming movie about the Zelda Video Game Series.
» RickRoll by Phone: Now you can prank call/rick roll people by phone.
» Digg’s April Fools Day Joke: Digg a story and look at the new digg count.
» New World of Warcraft Hero Class: Bard
» Amazing new Gmail feature!!!: GMail now has a feature that allows one to put their own time stamp. So if you were supposed to email that message an hour ago, just put the time stamp to ’sent two hours ago’ and you’re good.
» gDay Mate: Lets you search tomorrow’s content (See what team wins the football game, etc.). In my opinion funnier than the GMail one.
I’ll update it as I see more.
As you read the letter I link to on the bottom, listen to this pathetic music video in the background. It was posted on the digg page for this story by a digg user, and it fits perfectly, makes the whole situation a whole lot funnier.
Someone found a ‘love’ letter on the street and thought it was really funny and posted it online. It looks like it’s written by a 3rd grader or something (It’s not). Anyways it’s basically something about some girl saying he’s ugly and he’s making a scene about how his feelings are hurt and how she should go with him and leave her boyfriend cause he will buy her anything she wants. It’s then followed by a response by the girl. Pretty funny.
WOOO! Take a look for yourself, here! There’s also a universal taxonomy, so that subjects aren’t tied down to a content type (Videos, Images, Stories, etc.). You can view images in a cool mosaic form too! Man, everything looks so much nicer. Digg is honestly one of my most favorite sites on the web, next to Google.
Finally there’s going to be an Images section in Digg! This is going to be great. It will have a crawler which scans the submitted page (If it is a page and not directly an image) for other images so that there can be thumbnails for each so that the viewers could click on an individual thumbnail to go straight to that picture.
Also today I noticed that I no longer have to type in CAPTCHAs! It was getting annoying because I had to type in CAPTCHAs after making a new account whenever I made shouts or commented. This wasn’t true with my old account though. If it’s just me that no longer has to type CAPTCHAs then either my bugging of Digg Support got them to turn them off for me or Digg has a system where after a while it figures, “What the heck, this guy isn’t a spammer” so they remove the CAPTCHAs. Either way, it’s nice and I appreciate it! It makes my experience a lot nicer because before I would type a comment then type in the correct CAPTCHA (Honestly, exactly the right CAPTCHA) and it would say I typed it in wrong, making me refresh the entire page, look for the comment I was replying to, then pasting the comment into it again. It was annoying.
The Images section as well as a few other changes will go live later tonight, I can’t wait!
